Gallant Police officers on Monday morning, foiled an attempt by suspected kidnappers to hijack a Lagos bound 15-seater commercial around Rumuji, in Emohua Local Government area of East-West road of Rivers State. Spokesman of the Rivers State Police Command, DSP Nnamdi Omoni, who confirmed the incident said that as soon as the kidnappers sighted the commercial bus, they started firing at it from the bush to force it to stop.

But some policemen arrived the scene and engaged the hoodlums in a gun duel, thereby, forcing the hoodlums to flee into the nearby bush. The policemen chased the suspects into the bush and eventually, killed three of them, while five others were arrested. The arrested suspects are helping the police as they under are undergoing interrogation.

DSP Omoni further said the Police had assisted the rest of the passengers to continue their journey to Lagos but the driver of the bus could not continue the journey because of the bullet wound he sustained during the battle between the Police and hoodlums.

“The kidnappers emerged from the bush and shot at the tyre of bus. Since launching of the “Operation Sting”,we are very much on ground. We sighted them and they opened fire. We returned fire, killed three of them and arrested five who are helping us with investigation. We had to make alternative arrangements for the passengers to continue their journey to Lagos, while the driver who sustained minor injury was taken to the hospital”

Today’s incident is one major breakthrough since Governor Nyesom Wike launched “Operation Sting”on July 26,2019. Wike said the initiative is a signal for criminals to understand there is no hiding place for them in the state.

“Operation Sting is our own specialized security initiative anchored on an integrated and coordinated approach fully funded by the Rivers state government to effectively tackle both the sources and drivers of insecurity. The operation is also to fight against every security threat to our state, our persons and our properties in order to create the right social environment to drive our development. Under Operation Sting we have taken concrete steps to strengthen logistics and operational capability of the civil and armed security forces,” he said.

Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State on Monday rose from a crucial meeting with Vigilante/Neighbourhood Watch groups in the 17 local government areas of the state and took decisive decisions towards strengthening the security of the state.

A statement by the Secretary to the State Government, Simon Ortuanya, shortly after the meeting, stated that the state government upon reviewing the security situation in the state resolved to send an Anti-kidnapping Bill to the state assembly as an Executive Bill, to ensure maximum security.

According to the statement, the state government also resolved to immediately overhaul the Vigilante Watch structure in the state for optimised service delivery, adding that the Enugu State Neigbourhood Watch Law 2016 will equally be reviewed.

Mr Ugwuanyi’s administration further resolved to employ 1,700 Forest Guards within 30 days, comprising 100 persons per local government area, in compliance with the recent decision of theSouth-East Governors Forum on community policing.

It informed interested applicants with a passion for service to submit their application at the office of the Security Chief of the State Security Services (SSS) in their respective local government areas of origin for necessary action.

The state government also approved the payment of stipends to 5,200 Vigilante/Neighbourhood Watch personnel comprising 20 persons per ward in the state, reassuring its commitment to the peace and security of lives and property.

Jeremiah Omolara, a resident pastor of the Living Faith Church, Romi New Extension, in Kaduna State has been killed while his wife was abducted by unknown gunmen in Kaduna state on Sunday August 4th.

Decrying the spates of abduction in Kaduna and environs, Reverend Hayab said last Thursday August 1st, unknown gunmen attacked the parish priest of Kasuwan Magani, Kajuru Local Government Area, at his resident and a security guard was killed.

“In the same Kaduna LGA, a 13 year old daughter of a Baptist pastor was abducted, as I speak with you now, she is still with the kidnappers and they are demanding for a large sum of money. In Kudandan, in one of our churches called friendship international, gunmen broke into the pastor’s house and took him away. As at Friday, the kidnappers were asking us to pay N4 million or we should not call them again.

”Now the Living Faith Church pastor was abducted along Kaduna-Abuja and was killed while his wife was abducted. That tells you that the new trend is to attack us in our homes or in our churches or on the roads.

”We are just not safe anywhere and we asked the same question we have been asking; where are our security agencies? Are we being told tactically that we should defend ourselves? If we start defending ourselves, it means that we no longer have security or we no longer have government. Or is this government only for those they love and they don’t care about others?

“We feel strongly that the federal government and the Inspector General of Police should do something about Kaduna, since we have a governor who does not listen and feels he knows everything but sadly, there is nothing to show about what he knows. Even after the killing of the security guards of the parish priest, we heard that he called the priest; is it calling the victims that we want or addressing the security challenges.

”If you speak to me as Rev. Hayab when criminals attack me, what help have you done to me? You are not helping to stop the attack. So we are really concerned and concerned that people, especially clergies in Kaduna are no longer safe. We don’t want a situation where we will be forced to think of how to protect ourselves, we believe that government is there to protect us” he said
